He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Psalm 32:8
I will forever be grateful that I grew up on a farm. Living beside wonderful grandparents who contributed so much to my life. The farm is such a rich place. There is no limitation on the life lessons it teaches or the spiritual principles we find illustrated.
One of my favorite times of day living on the farm was late afternoon. The animals all began to settle in. The cows coming back to the barn amazed me. They seemed to know when to head back. They must possess an internal clock. Everyday, give a few minutes or so, they came to the barn. Faithful as clockwork.
The next amazing thing was that they stayed on the same path. They had a path worn out in the pasture that they all walked back on in the evenings. It was very narrow. It came straight to the barn with no detours. Such large creatures following such a narrow path. It kept them safe and headed to the place they were supposed to go.
Our parents are tasked with guiding us and directing us. They counsel us on walking in the ways of Father God. They explain what paths lead to Him and where the wrong paths take us. If not by their counsel, certainly with their behavior.
One thing that always stood out to me was…“The Look”. Surely I could not have been the only recipient of The Look. Remember when you would be behaving or speaking badly and you looked up to see your Dad looking directly at you? He didn’t need to say one word…the look said it all. “Straighten up. Otherwise, there will be consequences”. It didn’t take any words. You knew.
He was giving you counsel with his eye. The way scripture declares our heavenly Father does.
We must know who our Father is to receive his counsel. If we are looking at someone else’s dad, we won’t be paying attention to our dad. It seems so simple. We must look at His face to see His eye. Otherwise, we miss His counsel. We won’t see the path we should take.
Whose face are you looking at? Whose face am I looking to?
