What Holds Me

In Genesis 1:26-27, we find;
Then God said, “ Let us make man in Our image, according to our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Then in Genesis 2:20-22 we find;
And the man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam, there was not found a helper suitable for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in that place.
And the LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

What a picture this creates in our minds. The LORD God has created the earth. He has created the man Adam. But after an inventory of all living things there is not anything or anyone that is suitable to be Adam’s helper.

The word used for our Father ‘creating’ is “bara”. Only God can “bara”. He alone can speak into being that which is not. Not one of us has this ability. Yet Abba has not created the one suitable for Adam.

The next scene finds Adam in a deep sleep. Abba has taken out a rib and closed Adam’s side back up. (It sounds like the first surgery…but I don’t know) The Word then tells us He fashions a woman from the rib. The intention here is to say He formed woman. In verse 7 of Genesis 2, we find, “Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

Oh how this sets us apart. We weren’t spoken into being. The LORD God Himself formed man. His hands formed mankind. Stop and just imagine the true and living God of the Universe holding man in His hands. Making man into His image.

As we go through scripture it tells us that our names are inscribed on His hand. Psalm 37:24 tells us “ the LORD is the One who holds his hand.” Psalm 73:23 “Thou hast taken hold of my right hand.”

So many images of the One who formed us with His hands, holding our hand. Those same hands that made us, holding us safely. Do you remember holding your Dad’s hand or your mother’s hand? Didn’t that boost you confidence? Couldn’t you sense the protection and care?

I just like to think that the hands that formed us, now hold us safely. No one can snatch us from His hand. We are safe. Stay close…He will hold you.
