The Good Portion

It is always interesting to watch people go through a buffet line, or order an exquisite meal. They look carefully at each prepared dish, deciding which item they will choose. The colors and smells overwhelm the senses. Everyone is determined to choose the very best dishes.

In 1994, Baxter ran the Charlotte Observer Marathon. It was January and cold. He had trained well and I had few reservations about him running the race. He finished well and we were ecstatic.

We waited for him in the old Civic Center downtown. When he finished and came walking in with that silver space material wrapped around him, I saw it in his eyes…he was starving!.

The food provided for runners is always good. They had fruit, pasta, juice, hydration drinks, the works. We were getting plates of food and feeding him as fast as we could. But then he saw HER.

This dear lady was an elite runner. The food provided for them is catered and a cut above what the regular guys received. She was holding a large bowl of beautiful pasta salad. Baxter grabbed my arm and said, “I want some of what she has!” I tried to explain she was an elite runner and they would not allow me to get that food for him. The next thing out of his mouth was, “You don’t understand. I’m hungry.” We have always teased Baxter telling him we thought he was gonna eat my arm off. (LOL)

This sweet lady must have heard what was going on. She came over and gave her pasta salad to Baxter. He was most appreciative. He wasn’t going to settle for an average portion…He wanted the best portion.

In Luke 10:38-42 we find Mary doing what Baxter did. She saw the “best portion”. Mary saw the spiritual food Jesus had was what she was hungry for. She wasn’t going to settle for less.

Let’s look for the best portion…for the food we really need.
