Thirsty
Trying to keep extra weight off so these arthritis joints don’t hurt when we exercise or do races began to be a challenge in my late 40s. I’d never fought extra pounds too much until then. If I exercised regularly, the weight would stay off. But as we age, I’ve just about decided that air has calories and we are gonna gain weight if we breathe!
In my search to stay healthy, I read tons of books by physicians and health gurus. I needed to figure out how to defeat the pounds. One of the books, “The 7 Pillars of Health”, became a “go to” resource. We were already doing most of what this doctor suggested, but we were weak on his first and most important “pillar”…water.
We drank some water. But certainly not the amount he prescribed. He said that when people came to see him, one of the first things he asked them to do was drink water. In just a short amount of time, maybe a week or a month, many symptoms disappeared.
We were already eating vegetables we raised, had chickens for eggs, and bought meat locally. We did have some processed stuff. Maybe crackers, peanut butter, and of course homemade desserts. Life was getting ready to change.
We gave up most sweets…diet drinks…and we got our daily quota of water for the day. We did feel better.
Here is the thing I learned. Sometimes when I thought I was hungry, I was actually thirsty. If I would drink 8 ounces of water, I wouldn’t be hungry any more. Imagine that! All those afternoons I’d eaten a snack, I just needed water.
And so I’ve found this applies spiritually. Sometimes I think I need something, or someone, when I’m actually thirsty for the living water that is only available in Him. I’m spiritually starving for what is only available in Christ. Haven’t you seen people who are so thirsty spiritually they are about to perish and they don’t even know it?
I marvel at this, we know we have a need…we know we are empty…we are certain we need something…and we refuse to drink from the source of living water.
How easy it is to be satisfied…drink…from the source of living water.
…Jesus stood up and cried out, saying, “If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in me as the scripture said, from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38 NASB
Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; Isaiah 55:1 NASB
And the Spirit and the Bride say,” Come”. And let the one who hears say, “Come” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes, take the water and without cost. Revelation 22:17 NASB
WOW!
I love this, Gwen.
So true with water to quench our thirst we may not recognize and living water to quench our desires for things other than Father God.
I think you wrote this with Mari and me in mind. Pray we get thirsTy for regular water too.
