The Young Rooster
Last summer we lost our chickens to a predator. It was so sad to find them “murdered”. Our chickens don’t just keep us supplied with eggs, they are a constant source of humor and a few good lessons.
When spring arrived this year, we purchased new chicks. There were weeks of keeping them under a heat lamp. Then we transferred them to a very large pet crate for a couple of weeks. Next, they graduated to the little chicken house with all the new repairs we had made. Predators weren’t getting in this time.
They have grown so much now. Almost fully grown. After moving into the chicken house, Baxter and I noticed one of the “chickens” had spurs that were too large. This “chicken” also had a red comb on its head that was entirely too large for any chicken. Well,of course, it’s a rooster.
We don’t mind having one rooster. They can help protect the chickens and there is always the bonus of baby chicks…and crowing.
Maybe you don’t think that the crowing would be a bonus, but we do. I guess it’s the memory of childhood. The sounds of the barnyard. It always seems happy.
Last week, early one morning when Baxter went to let the chickens out and feed them…there the little rooster went. That little fella reared back as far as possible on his feet…his chest filled up and grew broad…then he let it go…his first crow. Pitiful. It was more like a cock-a-doodle squeak than an actual crow. He tried again and it was better. Once more he tried again and it was even better.
I’ve thought a great deal about that lone little rooster in a pen full of hens.
He didn’t get in a nest and try to lay an egg.
He hasn’t clucked around and acted like a chicken.
He has behaved like a rooster.
He realized what he was and started to crow like the rooster he is.
How about that?
Even a rooster is confident of who he is.
And we should be too.
We are children of the true and living God, YHWH.
We are redeemed, forgiven, and lavished with grace.
The blood of our Messiah, Yeshua has paid the price for our sin.
We have access to the throne of grace.
Holy Spirit lives within us.
Our Messiah is preparing a place for us to dwell with Him forever.
He is returning one day.
I TOTALLY understand your message. Thank you. I’ve had chicken for most of 45 years. I love and adore them…each with their own personalities. And roosters. OMG! I think they are just the best. They DO protect. They DO know their purpose in life. We should all be so fortunate. Love you dear friend.
