Cain killed his brother Abel.

Ham uncovered his father Noah’s nakedness.

Abraham lied and said Sarah was his sister.

Jacob cheated his brother Esau out of his blessing and birthright.

Jacob’s sons sold their brother Joseph.

Amnon raped his sister Tamar.

Absalom killed his brother Amnon.

Absalom took his father David’s throne.

Queen Athaliah killed all the royal offspring…children and grandchildren.

This is not an exhaustive list.

This is family? We see so many families that become divided. They become estranged. The news reports have stories of mothers and fathers killing each other and killing their children. Children are abandoned. Abuse is rampant. What in the world?

The place where we should be the most secure…The safest. That place becomes the deadliest…the least secure place. Home and family were never designed to be harmful or deadly. God had a perfect plan in mind.

Marriage is supposed to picture our relationship with Christ. As Christ loved the Church so the husband is to love his wife. The wife is supposed to respect her husband. Children are to be raised in the fear of the LORD. What happened? Sin. We are forever broken and scarred by sin. 

Without the redeeming work of Christ on the cross we are condemned to brokenness and failure. 

We can’t love well with our human love. It is selfish.  We put ourselves first. The only way we can love well is to ask Abba God to place His love within us. When we love with His love…then our love is genuine. Then all is well. 

Our hope in this world is Christ. He isn’t just for Eternity. With Him living inside us and others…we can have hope for families to operate in love. Husbands and wives protect and care for each other and their children. Homes can become places of love and security.
