Daffodils and Hope
We have had some really frigid weather in December and now in January. The birds are quieter. My donkey and goats tell me just how cold it is. I come in from chores frozen. The cold has been fierce.
I love the seasons. They structure the year in a sweet rhythm that I appreciate. But continued cold weather 20 degrees or less gets old very quickly. I can’t imagine months on end of this type of cold. With leaves off the trees and the flowers dried and dead, it looks forlorn. It feels thoroughly hopeless. There doesn’t seem to be any new life coming. Hope wanes.
If there is a need we all have, it is hope. A person with no hope is an unhealthy person. Take away hope and people falter…fail…stop living life.
That’s where the daffodils enter this cold, dead picture. When I walk through the natural parts of our yard this time of year, the daffodils begin to peek out of the frozen ground. When I begin to see them, it’s unbelievable. A true surprise. How can these delicate shoots push through that frozen dirt? I have no idea. I just know that in the middle of the harshest conditions where there appears to be no new life …there is. Hope rises in my heart.
“Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.” Joshua 21:45
“The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you in His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
“Those who know Your Name will put their trust in You; for You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:10
“I will trust and not be afraid; for YAH, the LORD has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2
It is amazing to me how our God speaks to us in our everyday circumstances. It is absolutely true that His creation does declare His glory. We need only to pay attention.
Hope can rise in our hearts.
