Worry

The Word is clear on this point. “Do not worry.”
Matthew 6:31
Matthew 6:34
Matthew 10:19
Mark 13:11
Luke 12:11
Luke 12:22
Luke 12:26
And this is just what the gospels say.

We are not to WORRY. Why? What does worry do to us?

Worry- Malign.Vexatious. To disturb. To tease. To harass. Trouble. To tear, to mangle with the teeth. Webster Dictionary 1828

Some worry more than others but everyone can worry at some point about something. The truth about worry is how futile it is. It has no power to change events or outcomes. Worry does not establish anything good.

Worry does however take a considerable amount of energy. It can wear you out. Have you ever listened to someone in the throes of a “worry fit”? Their thoughts can be disjointed or incoherent.. They become so agitated, fearful, troubled…it’s painful.

As a child and a young person, I was a great worrier. I have no idea why. I had great parents and grandparents. We weren’t rich but we weren’t poor. Almost no one had money in those days. But most everyone owned their land and their home. The trucks and the tractors were paid for. So why did I worry?

As I think back, my paternal grandmother worried. She lost her mother as a teen and married right after WWI. She always worried the crops would fail or the banks or she would lose one of us…it’s the only reason I can come up with for my worries.

But I have seen this and know it to be true. Worry does tear you apart. It rips you from the safe place where you dwell with the Father. You are pulled in two directions at the same time. In one direction you see the promises and safety of Abba and in the other direction destruction, sickness, accidents, and failure. Worry will tear you to pieces…pull you apart…

No wonder we are commanded not to worry. It is so destructive to our hearts and spirit. Not to mention worry can’t exist where faith and trust abide. And that is what we do know our Abba desires us to do…have faith in Him and trust Him in all things.

How do we want to live? Steady. Confident. Filled with faith and trust in the One we know is faithful and trustworthy. OR, pulled apart, torn apart with fear and worry. No one can choose for us…we must choose for ourselves.
