Clay

I love how scripture connects. That what is taught in one place can be found in another.

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7NASB

But now, O Lord, Thou art our Father, We are the clay, and Thou our potter; And all of us are the work of Thy hand. Isaiah 64:8NASB

Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use, and another for common use? Romans 9:21NASB

In Genesis we see Abba forming man out of the dust of the earth. So it naturally follows that the analogy of a potter forming clay into vessels is appropriate. I never made the connection between these verses before. I knew them. But never gave the first thought to the importance of why the analogy was so appropriate. (I guess I’m a slow student!) We are formed of the dust (clay) of the earth and certainly, potters use the earth’s clay…just never connected the dots.

And while we are on the topic of being formed out of clay, I just want to throw this out there. “Adam” in Hebrew means “ruddy”; a human being; man; representative emboidoment of humanity…I know it’s just me and this North Carolina red clay…but ruddy? Was the clay red? Like our red clay? When I’m out on this red North Carolina clay…It just makes me think.

I know it’s not the big theological question…I’m not trying to be silly…but I always love just to wonder…to ask…to love the marvel of all Abba did at creation.
