Bathsheba
Bathsheba has always stirred a ‘wondering” in me. How did a beautiful, godly wife belonging to one of King David’s most valiant men end up in such a web of intrigue? I am putting forth some questions I have.
Did she have a choice?
King David “sent for her”. Could she have refused? If she did refuse to go, would she be killed to silence the matter?
Why was King David able to see her as she bathed?
It was evening when David saw her, had she been prudent in choosing the time to bathe? Who put the bath in a place where her modesty could be violated? Was King David somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be?
When she arrived at the palace, how was King David able to seduce her?
Was there no one brave enough to speak on her behalf? Did she secretly desire King David? And again, if she refused his advances, did that mean death to her?
When Bathsheba beccame pregnant, how much courage did it take to tell the king?
Would he be angry? Would she be found out and stoned to death? Would KIng David want his child?
When Uriah comes home from the battle and does not go in to sleep with his wife, what does this say?
Scripture says Uriah believes it a travesty to find comfort in his wife’s arms while his fellow soldiers fight…but how much does Uriah love her?
After Uriah is killed, does Bathsheba know David had Uriah killed?
How do you carry a man’s child who murdered your husband, seduced you…how do you become another one of David’s many wives?
I have always thought much was required of Bathsheba. She obviously rose to the occasion. She raised the next king of Israel. When another of David’s sons tried to take the throne Bathsheba valiantly goes to the king on Solomon’s behalf. King David crowns Solomon king before he dies.
I wonder too…what began as a man filled with his own desire, using a beautiful woman…did King David find Bathsheba was more than a pretty face? Did he discover a daughter of Israel who was strong in her faith and a lover of Jehovah God? Was this why King David chose Solomon to be king?
For myself, sometimes I read scripture too fast…with too much familiarity…I don’t slow down to consider the impact events had on lives. I miss something Abba might be saying to me. I just wonder…it looks as if Abba God can use us…no matter what.
Great questions, Gwen! I have often wondered myself.
Bathsheba knew what she was doing when she took that bath on the roof so David could see her. I remember studying her in Bible study. She and her son Solomon tried to convince David of some things in his later years. Both David and she had their own motives for what they did but God used them to do his work and David became his beloved. David is one of my favorite characters in the Bible because he did not always do the right thing but God still loved his heart. Lesson for all of us.
I love that we can ask questions and still have peace that God’ has all the answers! Trusting in Him, is essential. 💗
