I Never Knew You

I love having chickens. Just a few 10 or 12. I’ve had Americanas. They lay pink, blue and green eggs. It’s like Christmas every morning once they begin to lay. I know. It doesn’t take much to entertain me.

But this time, I got Rhode Island Reds. They are reliable, healthy, and not as mean as Americanas. They run to the door of my little chicken house every morning anticipating their food and fresh water. They “talk” to me in the mornings. One of the “girls” thinks she is the boss. I enjoy watching her position herself as dominant.

The “girls” know me. They aren’t afraid of me. They are waiting for me in the morning, knowing that I will come. It’s when I’m gone that there are issues.

When someone new comes in the door, there are “chicken screams”, flapping of wings, running around the little house stirring up dust…they don’t know this person.

Can’t an old granny get a day off once in a while?

The faith lesson I always think of is the “knowing”. Those little chickens “know” me. It is the everyday contact. The nurturing and care they receive. I don’t show up once a week or once a month. I am there every day.

I think a relationship with Jesus Christ is the same. If I want to know Him, I must spend time with Him every day. And talk to Him more than once in the morning or at night. We can have a quiet time together with Him. But can’t we say as we go along, “Did you see that? Are you gonna put up with them acting so ugly?” Or, “ Help me! That semi truck is gonna hit me!” Or, “ My dear Jesus, I really messed that up…help me make it right.”

We show up knowing He has already shown up. We walk with Him. In this daily walk, I learn about Him and know He knows me. For me, the worst thing I could ever hear the Savior say is,”I never knew you.”

Do you know Him? Are you known by Him?
