The Rock

In my morning prayer time, one Psalm I recite is Psalm 91. I need all the spiritual protection possible to go to battle in prayer. Every morning when I get to verse 14, I get the same mental picture… A raging river with a tall rock.

We have spent a great deal of family time on the water. In my growing up years, our Dad had boats for us to use. We spent summer days on the river fishing, swimming, and water skiing with cousins. The river was our “Happy Place”. We didn’t get to go to the river if the yard wasn’t mowed, the garden tended, vegetables for the week harvested and canned. We worked hard to get down there. Grandmothers, Aunts, Cousins all came. It was pure delight. We loved the water.

When I married, I was so fortunate Baxter loved the water too. The tradition of water sports continued.

We would go canoeing on the New River. The rapids weren’t too bad. It was great fun. So when we took the children to Wyoming on vacation, Baxter decided we would go down the Snake River. These were REAL rapids. We had graduated from kindergarten to advanced studies. This river is not for the faint of heart.

There were huge boulders in the middle of the river. The rapids were treacherous. I was sure this might be the worst decision we ever made. But I looked at the children’s faces and they were having such fun. Maybe those big rocks in the middle of the rapids could mean something else.

“Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known my Name.” Psalm 91:14 NASB

And that is the visual I have every morning as I repeat this Psalm. Trouble, danger, trial, despair, swirling all around…like the Snake River. The danger is real. But He has set me securely on high. He has set me on a high rock above all the danger and I am safe. He places me on our Rock…Christ Jesus.
