Frogs

In the South, on warm nights the symphony of the bullfrogs can be heard. Have you ever walked down a dusty farm road at dusk and heard the frogs begin to sing in a pond? It is a soothing sound to me. In the pond behind our house where we grew up, there was a whole orchestra of frogs. Our family would sit outside at night and just listen. The sky would be clear and a million stars would be shining. It was heaven on earth.

My Dad was a hunter and a fisherman. We ate whatever he brought in. It could be deer, rabbit, quail, or dove…but sometimes it was frog!

There were Sunday mornings we would wake up to scrambled eggs from my grandmother’s chickens and fried frog legs. It was a delicacy. Dad and his buddies would have spent Saturday night gigging frogs. They would dress them and surprise their families with a special Sunday breakfast. It just seemed normal to me.

I heard a preacher once say as Christians we should not have an image of a frog in our homes because the Egyptians had worshipped frogs. He read the whole story from Exodus. It always bothered me. They were God’s creatures. I didn’t worship frogs. Nevertheless, I had a “pause” in my heart over the whole matter.

Then entered into my life a pastor who collected frogs. People gave her frogs. She loved them. Ok, I need to know, “Why?”.

Her husband had told her she was a frog. Why on earth did He say that? Because she, Fully Relies On God. An acronym. FROG.

I just loved it.

We must be careful how we listen. We must be cautious about who we listen to. Although most times it is well-meaning, we can be sidetracked or receive wrong teaching. The Word tells us to “guard our hearts”. I intend to use more discretion.

I have one of her dear frogs on my desk. It reminds me of her life walk.

These days when I hear the bullfrogs, I pretend they sing, “Fully Rely On God”.
